What is this lens?
Hermeticism is a philosophical and esoteric tradition associated with writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, a legendary figure combining Greek and Egyptian wisdom traditions. A later popular teaching—especially in The Kybalion (1908)—names Correspondence: the idea that similar patterns may appear at different scales, from a single life to a larger order. Through this lens, recurring structures across a person, a society, or a cosmology become easier to notice. The useful question is where the rhyme illuminates something; resemblance alone does not establish one shared doctrine.
What does it look for?
- Correspondence. Similar patterns may show up at different scales—inner and outer, small and large—without those levels being the same thing.
- The Kybalion (1908) is a modern presentation of Correspondence and should not be treated as identical with the ancient Hermetica.
Reality seems like the most obvious thing there is: whatever is actually here. The question becomes harder when we notice that everything we know arrives through perception, memory, language, and expectation. Are we encountering reality as it is, or reality as it appears to us?
Philosophers, scientists, and contemplative traditions approach this question by different routes. Taoist teaching speaks of a Way that resists final naming. Naturalistic philosophies begin with the physical world. Other philosophies treat mind or consciousness as fundamental. Science investigates measurable patterns without settling every philosophical question about what ultimately exists.
Placed beside each other, these approaches reveal a recurring movement: what seems self-evident becomes difficult to separate from the way it is known. That shared movement is worth following even when the answers divide. Nothing in the comparison suggests that poetry about the Way confirms quantum physics; a sacred text and an experiment answer to different standards.
