What is God?

People use the word God for a personal creator who hears prayer, for ultimate reality beyond naming, for the ground of love, or for a mystery language can only point toward.

Traditions disagree sharply about what that word can rightly mean. Some speak in theology: God as Father, Lord, or Trinity within Christian faith. Some speak in philosophy: God as first cause, necessary being, or the one substance of which everything is a mode. Some speak in metaphor: the sacred depth of life, or the love that holds all things together without being a person at all.
