What is awakening?

Awakening, liberation, salvation, and enlightenment are related English words for deep transformation—but they are not interchangeable.

Different traditions describe different goals and paths. What Buddhism calls awakening is not automatically what Christianity calls salvation, and Hindu moksha is not Buddhist nirvana simply because all three sound lofty in translation.
