What is awakening?

Can a life change at its root—not simply acquire better habits or a new explanation, but become free of something that once seemed inescapable? The possibility has drawn people into practice, inquiry, devotion, and hope. It has also left them asking what such a change would actually mean.

English often places awakening, liberation, salvation, enlightenment beside one another. The arrangement can hide as much as it reveals, since each word arose within a different account of what has gone wrong in a life and what release would mean.
