What happens when we die?

Someone who spoke, remembered, and answered is suddenly beyond reach. What has ended when a person dies—and could anything of that life continue?

The body’s death is a common limit, but it leaves the living with questions that observation alone does not settle. Is the person gone, transformed, awaiting new life, or caught in a longer continuity of action and consequence? Grief can make those questions intimate long before they become theology or philosophy.
