How should we live?

What should you do when loyalty asks one thing, mercy another, justice a third—and no outcome is certain? We live among appetites, ambitions, relationships, obligations, and beliefs about what, or whom, our lives answer to. None disappears merely because a moral rule has been named.

One approach asks what kind of person a choice expresses and strengthens. Another asks what duty requires regardless of preference. Another looks first at who may be harmed or helped. Religious ethics may place all three within life before God: faithfulness, command, mercy, repentance, and accountability. These concerns can reinforce one another, but they can also pull apart.
