Lens
Historical
The historical lens asks what can be dated, sourced, and placed in sequence. It begins with the older text or community, then follows how interpretation, institution, and later speculation accumulated around it. History does not settle every dispute, but it helps the layers become visible.
What it looks for
- Source before overlay. Ask what the older text or community actually says, then name later expansions and modern theories as later.
- Label the kind of claim. A verse, a later book in someone’s name, a church decision, and a twentieth-century theory are four different kinds of statement.
Keep in view
- Traditional religious readings remain part of the story, but this lens keeps them distinct from what can be established about the earlier source and setting.
