Hermetic: Mentalism
Hermeticism is a philosophical and esoteric tradition associated with writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus. Later popular Hermetic teaching—especially The Kybalion (1908)—calls one of its principles Mentalism: the idea that mind or consciousness is fundamental to reality. Through this lens, passages about mind, awareness, and the relation between inner and outer experience become easier to notice. The comparison is philosophical: ancient Hermetic texts, The Kybalion, and the traditions read through the lens remain distinct.
What it looks for
- Mentalism. In Hermetic teaching, mind or consciousness is taken as fundamental to reality—the world is, in some deep sense, mental.
The Kybalion gives Mentalism its familiar modern formulation. Ancient Hermetic texts also explore mind and cosmos, but these bodies of writing belong to different periods and do not speak with one historical voice.
